Thinking on your feet.

One of the most important things I ever learned in life was to be ready with an answer. This was especially true when I was in teaching. Surrounded by students who thought they knew everything, even though I had even at that age probably forgotten more than they had as yet learned.

There was always in every group of students the one or two whom tried to show off there clever wit and brawn, especially if there happened to be in the same class  a girl that they were at all fond of.

I never really met any of them as fast witted and smooth with words than the tale I wish to share with you today.

This young lad had a job working in a greengrocer. He had until the time in question been given cleaning and preparation jobs. The owner of the shop had first wanted to get to know him a bit before letting him free with the customers.

Eventually the day came when he was allowed to be front of store and serving.

A man walked into the shop and asked to buy half a head of cabbage.

The boy told him that they only sold whole heads of cabbage. The man was insistent
that the boy ask his manager about the matter.

Walking into the back room, the boy said to his manager, "Some asshole
wants to buy a half a head of cabbage."

As he finished his sentence, he turned to find the man standing right behind him,
so he added, "and this gentleman kindly offered to buy the other half."

The manager approved the deal and the man went on his way.

Later the manager found the boy and said "I was impressed with the way
that you got yourself out of that situation earlier. We like people who think on their feet here.

Where are you from, son?"

"Canada, sir," the boy replied.

"Well, why did you leave Canada," the manager asked.

The boy said, "Sir, there's nothing but Whores and Hockey players up there."

"Really!" said the manager. "My wife is from Canada!"

The boy replied, "No way??? Who did she play for?"

Have a wonderful day.
